I enjoy Twitter; enjoy seeing updates from people I respect, find interest in and just plain enjoy. Updates from people whom I’m hoping will be just as blown away with the profundity of my posts as I know they are hoping I will be with their posts. A diverse network containing virtual assistants and connections to VAnetworking.com along with folks in other fields that appreciate technology in their efforts to communicate.
After the first couple hundred peeps that I began to follow, though, a very real level of discomfort has been bothering me.
When I follow YOU, I want to see your updates often. I chose to follow you. I have turned off the option for ‘auto-follow’. I know that saves work, but it seems so phony. I’m willing to let others follow me and seldom block anyone permanently, but I want you to be chosen for me to follow.
Even at over 600 peeps being followed, I’m still determined to make the choice for each of you.
Now, the pleasant novelty of learning to express ourselves in 140 characters and yet provide links to further bits of our great thoughts using the ‘tiny’ urls has been violated by those who don’t appreciate community and a light touch on our networking connections.
Because Twitter is fun and because it makes me smile, doesn’t mean I diminish the value of having our connection just on the periphery of my vision, sort of like a little mouse dashing past.
Twitter is a great idea for the social media exercise. While I’m going to be touchy about who I follow, I do like the system a lot. I hope the coders can stay ahead of the rapists who foul the process with their nasty intrusive, thieving URLs. All of us can help by being wise about the links we post and the links we click on. And, watching who we follow. If we don’t follow creeps, they can’t leave their corrupt messages and links for us.
I’m going to continue making my network a CHOICE!! This networking, like all others, still resembles my ‘front door’ which I can choose to answer or not…my right and my privilege.
