VAcommentators & Volunteer Changes for Vanetworking.com

Foundations for the Future, an earlier blog post about Vacommentators told how the mission team works to promote VAnetworking.com and the network of virtual assistant members.

During a period of  very active growing activity, since October of 2008, we’ve been lead by Ruth Martin of Maplewood Virtual Assistance who is also very active in the forums at VAcommentators.   Being leader is more than getting to march at the head of the line.  Every week, volunteer commenters send links to their posts, comments, updates and tweets to Ruth for validation as we compete for getting the MOST action, not just being average, good enough or adequate.

In May, the leadership will be changing to another member of the Commentators.  Michelle Colvin, of MLC Business Solutions will be taking up the baton and moving forward.  In volunteer groups, it is always good for more people to try the leadership positions.  We never know when lives will change and the great leaders will need to focus on other areas.  Being virtual isn’t as impacted by moving away from a location.  Adding more clients,  taking on training, changing volunteer positions are all ways that virtual volunteers see change in their lives that is significant to the volunteer activities.

BLOG — A Winning 4 Letter Word

Blogs from BarJD, both for clients and for several topics have been receiving some remodeling efforts.   The blogs at WordPress.com have had author upgrades, while the self-hosted blogs using WordPress.org downloads have received new file names, experimental widgets and plug-ins.

In an effort to be unique, I made what I consider to be a poetic mis-choice.   I would try to make the blog file on my domain MEMORABLE by calling it more than blog.   Xxxx.com/Virtualblog, myblog, yourblog, anybodysblog, weblog.   The internet and hosts don’t care; there are links from my website to the blog, so what’s the problem?   What made this become, for me, a mis-choice and risky decision?

Because it occurs to me that readers may not follow my poetic naming pattern which has to come to most of them  through telepathy paths.  Sometimes the readers might have the right key words in  Google Blog search.   Sometimes, they will bookmark my blog page.  However, I suspect there are other times when they will remember the domain name and the four letter word, but be confused about the blog name.  They may not want to go ‘clickity, clickity’ through my website, but desire to go directly to the blog.

With much pain, sweating, swearing, hair-pulling and more, I’ve been changing the names of present blogs from their poetic tags to simply BLOG.   Xxxx.com/blog    All new ones are getting the four letter word.

As with the cobbler’s children, the Bar JD blog @ Bar JD Virtual Professionals is the very last one to get the changes.  But, they are coming!

This week, when writing about the newest recipient of the Vaccolade, Erin Stinson of Premier Virtual Office, I was pleased with the way Erin has made her self-hosted blog a subdirectory of her domain.  Additionally,  Erin, a fellow virtual assistant member of VAnetworking.com had recognized the value of maintaining a branding blog at WordPress.com.

VAccolade and Premier Virtual Office

Vaccolade Award goes to Erin Stinson of Premier Virtual Office this week!  Erin’s (fastfingers) has been a valuable and pleasant addition to the virtual assistant network at VAnetworking.com.   She is acknowledged in the forum and at Partnering with a Virtual Assistant, the official blog of VAnetworking.com

Operating from Bloomington, IL, Premier Virtual Office offers high quality assistance for a full service range of skills.  Clients must find that this office is ready to meet their goals in a professional way.

Erin has especially pleased me with the way she has set up her blogging practices.  As discussed in BLOG – A Better 4-Letter Word,  I’m seriously leaning to the school of thought that keeps the file name simple.  Erin has made Premier Virtual Office Blog, her self-hosted blog, a sub-directory of her domain, which creates interesting SEO opportunities because the sub-directory will be recognized by search engines as a separate website.  Additionally, she has caught on to the idea of maintaining a blog presence at WordPress.com, Virtual Assistant Resource, which offers excellent exposure and SEO.

Premier Virtual Office demonstrates the professional level of business that clients may expect from Vas in today’s business world.  BarJD.com applauds this fellow member of VAnetworking.com

Looking over at 1st VA

1st VA – Donna Toothaker is the recipient of the Vaccolade this week.  Vaccolade is the acknowledgment of fellow virtual assistants who are also members of the network at VAnetworking.com In addition to having an active VA business, Donna is a frequent participant in the exchanges at VAnetworking.com.

Donna has an interesting service niche serving the virtual needs of Coaches…particularly established coaches who have seen their business grow till help such as a VA is necessary.  Donna has figured out that coaches often have rather mobile businesses and working virtually completely changes the office dynamic to the benefit of the Coach client.  In turn, the coach/client can serve clients who seek coaching more effectively.

Membership in networks that serve our services, such as VAnetworking.com as well as networking with the client groups that we seek to work with is a major boost to our Internet presence.  Donna’s contribution is also noted on @BarJD Virtual Professionals blog.  She will be featured this week at Partnering with a Virtual Assistant, official blog for VAnetworking.com

Particularly Cloudy Work

To work in the Cloud or not to work in the Cloud; that is the Question.

As discussed on @BarJD Virtual Professionals and Web Chips, there are some interesting and challenging aspects of working online or in the Cloud.  Working in the Cloud is a topic I first learned about from other virtual assistants asking questions and sharing information at Vanetworking.com

Tools at Google Docs and Google Apps now let us utilize all of our office software skills for easy, swift collaboration for most tasks.  No doubt, there are some aspects of working together that would be better served at one of the services available such as BaseCamp (not an affiliate link), but Google’s tools are a good place to start.

Spreadsheets, documents, slide presentation and sites/wiki tools are basically the ones we use with any office software.  Google Sketchup is a modeling, dimensional tool that works with Google Earth, is for sale, requires a download, therefore, not exactly the CLOUD aspect that you find at the other tools.

I used to think there was nothing like WordPerfect/Corel, then I got ahold of MS Office which I confess to loving.  There were some tense moments before I learned that “labels” in the spreadsheet had now become “text”.  (In my mind, I still refer to them as labels.) MSWorks is another beast that can be used, but is very different from WordPerfect and MS Office.  OpenOffice is pretty close, but not the same.   Just so moves Google Docs…a different beast that needs some attention for you to find all the options for the tools.  There aren’t many toys, but adequate tools to work on a collaborative project.  When it is all done, it can be moved into something more complicated if necessary.  Let’s be honest, just how much of our collaboration truly benefits from the software toys or cannot develop without them.

319 Twitter Comments & Counting for John Jantsch of DuctTape Marketing

Over on @Bar JD Virtual Professionals, a blog post Longevity of a Tweety Blog Post for DuctTape Marketing,  enlarges on the December, 2008 post John Jantsch made on the DuctTape Marketing blog inviting commenters to leave their statement and Twitter id, inviting followers.  That post is entitled Get More Followers on Twitter and at this April, 2009 writing is still drawing comment and building a network of followers for many.

This blog post about the current leader in micro-blogging, Twitter, has led to many more Followers for me at my Twitter account.   Every time I make a comment on one of the DuctTape blog posts, I receive more of the sort of followers on Twitter that I like.  Internet marketers, journalists, attorneys, engineers, writers and more of the sort of people who are likely to need a virtual professional to help them with their projects.

Cheers for John Jantsch for pushing us to utilize social media tools for our businesses.    We can connect through micro-blogging resources such as Twitter, quazi-micros such as FaceBook with extra applications and space, forums such as VAnetworking.com for virtual assistants and clients, AND of course, our mouthy blogs!

Foundations for the Future

Over on @Bar JD Virtual Professionals, a blog post talks about the strength potential in many active members in VAnetworking.com, the primo network connection for virtual assistants.  The post is entitled VAcommentators
